Main influences:
  • Cy Twombly - inspired by his use of text in his work to tell a story or give off meaning to the audience.
  • Robert Rauschenberg - influenced by his use of structured collage
  • Jacques Villegle - inspired by his chaotic collage and techniques of layering and taking away.
  • The concept of a time capsule and how things can be preserved over time.
Materials needed:
  • three wood boards
  • cutting mat
  • stanley knife
  • photos for collage
  • mount board
  • scissors
  • mount spray
  • PVA glue
  • stamps
  • white acrylic
  • shades of brown pastels

A plan of the middle piece. The background will be covered in the rust coloured pastels and then will have layers and layers of copies of the New York letters and postcards and also stamps, to symbolise those letters. Then I will add a couple of layers of white acrylic to add subtleness to the outcome. I will then place the cardboard cutouts of the New York photos that I took into the piece in an organised way. My next job will be to add the words to the piece in the style of Twombly. Finally, I will be creating a postcard to go with this piece, with similar photos in a similar arrangement so that it can be the first postcard in the time capsule. These steps will be repeated on two other wood boards but with different photos and words.
