By recommendation of my peers, I was advised to look at Robert Rauschenberg's work, who uses multimedia to be able to create organised and structured collages. Whilst combining multiple influences such as; abstract expressionism and pop art, he manages to almost create his own individual style to express his own opinions. Unlike a lot of collagists, Rauschenberg creates organised and structured pieces of collage which is completely different to someone like Jacques Villegle.
The combination of collage and paint combines his influences together. For instance, when it comes to his paint marks, he uses simple brush strokes in certain areas rather than overpowering his pieces and making a wash over his collage. He believes it to be an interpretation of contemporary art indicating his feelings and opinions through one powerful brushstroke.
I really like how organised he is when it comes to the collage as I think it has the perfect amount of images on the page, which is different to Villegle's style, who does the complete opposite. I believe it acts a foundation for expressing his ideas and opinions in a visual format, which may work well in my project as I will be able to express my feelings towards my experience in New York.
When it comes to experimenting in Rauschenberg's style, I am going to separate the collage style and painting technique so that I can work on both individually and develop a certain technique that I am happy with. Once I have done this I will try and combine both techniques into one and then maybe add my own style of Cy Twombly's work into this.
