I created a couple of mock ups in the week leading up to my exam, each developing from one to the other, ultimately leading me to my final plan that I have for my exam.
 |
| This was the first mock that I created, which I was pleased with, however I thought that it was too basic and not interesting. I liked the composition of the photos in the piece, however I thought that I should have created more layers, strengthening the idea of time and the process of time it takes to layer the work. Additionally, I didn't like the square shape of the mount board I was working onto as it appeared too compact and almost squashed together. One thing I did like about this mock piece was the use of the white acrylic paint and how when spread with a palette knife the paint is pushed to the sides, creating additional form where it was lost through the flat collage. |

| Meanwhile, I much preferred this outcome and the overall composition of the piece. I was happy with the shape of the piece and the fact that I composed it portrait. I have also started to build up layers in this work, as you can see in some areas due to the double Statue of Liberties and the double American flag. I also began to tie in pieces of literature from the letters that I bought back from New York so that the concept of time can be showed due to the preservation of the letters. However, I still thought that the work was fairly flat and had no dimensions, which is why I went on to create a slightly more 3-D version in my next mock. |

| This is my final mock up of my exam piece, which I think was the most successful. Although not completely finished, I know exactly what to do (this will be seen in my plan). I still used the rust coloured background and the portrait orientated background, however the main difference was the fact that I had mounted the photos onto mount board and then cut them out with a Stanley knife. I think that the thickness of the board and the layering of the photos created a really interesting depth that couldn't have been achieved through just a normal collage. Taking influence from Rauschenberg's more organised and structured collage, I placed the photos neatly onto the background. I will also tie in influence from Twombly and village in my plan and my final outcome. |
